Hello and Goodbye and Hello Again

Change is in the air at CWN and it smells sweet.

Border Patrol (Sep. 13, 2004)

OR

Change for the sake of change

Sometimes a comicbook will make a dramatic 180-degree change in direction. A character will suddenly start eating shellfish when it has been a long standing character point that they think that most crustaceans are unto God and to even touch one will cause sores to open in places that are better left unmentioned outside even a Garth Ennis book. The explanation sometimes comes back “well, it was time for them to make a change” and I usually will go put the book back on the shelf and not revisit it, perhaps for ever. Don’t ask me for specifics in terms of titles or characters ‘cause I’m not a kiss-and-tell kind of guy and this is not a review piece, suffice-to-say it has happened and it was usually more extreme then simply changing a character’s eating habits.

What the hell am I going on about? Where’s the usual political ranting that somehow ties into comicbooks? Well, I’ll do a little ranting a bit down the page, if you want that just scroll down to the word RANT. But I recommend you read this other stuff ‘cause it will directly effect the whole of the known universe in the same way that a butterfly flapping its wings does the weather in Tokyo.

Comic World News is going through another morphing and not just 'cause we can. The look we’ve all come to love that was designed is mostly maintained by “JG” Roshell isn’t going anywhere and for the most part the content is staying put.
What we’ll be gaining is the long lost message board… not regaining because as far as we can determine all that content is L-O-S-T and until our bud over at the server company can fix the problem it is never to be recovered again. Frustrating, but not the end of the world, just a rebuilding process at worst. There will be a press release covering this fact and a mass movement across the web to invite posters so be forewarned. Also, look for some familiar names that will now be associated with us at the boards… I’m feeling a “cool” vibe from there and we’re not even live yet.
We’re adding a couple of new people to the staff. The review staff had to be expanded ‘cause Michael May was lost in the stack of books and might never have found his way out again if he hadn’t brought Immelda Alty, Barb Lien-Cooper and J.M. Johnston on board. The future of the reviews area is secure once again.
A columnist known to some of you, Shawn Hoke will be jumping on to CWN to give us a very focused regular column on the independent comicbook industry. Shawn also likes to talk on the boards so take advantage of the frequent talker.

The other major change you’ll see on the front page will be the removal of “Border Patrol”, “Quoth the Raiven” and “Subsurface Communications” as individual columns. No, Rai, Ed and I aren’t going anywhere no matter who might want it. We’ve all decided that while we like to talk we also know that we can really make a better impact here at CWN if we focus on content and pontificate less. That said you’ll soon see “That Time of the Month” popping up weekly with a rotating cast of characters contributing once a month. That is where you will find Ed and Rai as well as reviews editor Michael May once a month with my little voice thrown in as well. The voices will be the same just more consistently.

The rest of the content will remain the same with the same cast of characters coming and going and hopefully some LONG AWAITED stuff will also be coming through.

RANT

See, it was bound to happen in a Border Patrol column… I was bound to get around to immigration. I mean, going back in time the title came from a visit to San Diego and a discussion I had with a buddy there and then I used the term.

I look at my paycheck every 2 weeks and always notice all the deductions and taxes, one of them always being the money going to social security. Well, turns out that by the time I retire that none of that money will exist for me and mine or my peers. Bogus.
The Government (capital “G”) has misspent most of my money and invested at such low rates that I’d’ve been better off putting the money in a shoe box under my bed each pay period. I will have to rely on the various personal investments that I’ve set up or I will be eating cat food when I’m old and gray.
But, it also turns out that some illegal immigrants will also be tapping into these benefits in the meantime. I’m not kidding here. They come here illegally, or stay here beyond the time that they agreed on and are somehow entitled to put their hands into the money that I have been FORCED to put aside.
This is the time and place that my conservative righteousness comes roaring out. I will grant you that I don’t know all the details but I do know enough about it to know that all the wrong people support the continuation of this status and that all the right people are too whipped by politics and election-year cowardliness to talk too loudly about this obvious problem.
I challenge all the dyed-in-the-wool liberals who might be reading this to look deep inside yourself and ask if you feel that lawbreakers are entitled to all the same rights as those who work within the law.
I don’t even want to debate all the corporate big shots who are getting away with murder (sometimes literally) ‘cause that is not the issue I’m addressing here. And when they take money straight from my pocket like this I will be talking about it or at least pointing it out.
Think about every time that you’ve had to stretch your money a couple of extra days and how nice 20 or 30 extra bucks would have eased that. Then think about the fact that the 2nd largest source of income for the nation of Mexico is money sent back from the United States.
Okay, I’m done… I’m getting highly irritated here and will say something really mean if I don’t stop. But, I think you get my point here.

Okay, so look for the changes to CWN.

Vote Kerry/Edwards November 2nd.

Caleb

I buy my comics each week at The Comics Factory in Pasadena each and every week and if you’re in the area you should too
