Josh Neufeld on collaborating

More news from Alternative Comics; this time about the second issue of Xeric-winner Josh Neufeld's (American Splendor, A Few Perfect Hours) The Vagabonds.

The Vagabonds was designed as a solo title for Neufeld, but this issue, subtitled "Of Two Minds," has him teaming up with many different partners to explore the nature of creative collaboration.

I suppose that for some folks, having to rely on someone else to help tell a story might be frustrating, but it's not like that for me or anyone I know. True creative collaboration is exciting as hell. I'm not sure why that is, but I'm hoping that "Of Two Minds" will provide some insight.

According to the press release, the 17 pieces in the book "are grouped into five thematic sections: 'Confessions,' 'Health & Welfare,' 'Echoes,' 'Institutions,' and 'Loss.' This format allows the reader to appreciate the qualities that link each section’s stories — as well as those that set the pieces apart."

Several of the people in The Vagabonds #2 are folks who've collaborated with Neufeld in the past. Harvey Pekar (American Splendor), David Greenberger (Duplex Planet Illustrated), and R. Walker (Titans of Finance) are all represented, as are new contributors like "award-winning poet/memoirist Nick Flynn, literary cult figure Eileen Myles, and the New York downtown theater company The Civilians." The issue "also features offbeat collaborations with the likes of The Beatles’ 'Eleanor Rigby,' a 1980 issue of Superman, and Neufeld’s own mirror reflection."

The Vagabonds #2: Of Two Minds debuts at the The Small Press Expo in Bethesda, Maryland, on October 13-14, 2006.
